Leading the Way
At The University of Alabama, our work is measured not only by what happens on campus, but by how it strengthens communities across our state and nation. Our new Wiregrass Hub for water research is one example. It will bring UA’s expertise directly into southeastern Alabama, helping communities better prepare for challenges like flooding and drought while creating meaningful opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in work that makes a difference. This is who we are as Alabama’s flagship, where teaching, research and service come together to improve lives and prepare our graduates to lead with purpose.

Recognizing Excellence Across Our Campus
- The Premier Awards honor members of our community who represent the very best of The University of Alabama through scholarship, leadership and service. This year’s recipients have distinguished themselves in meaningful ways, from advancing research and supporting their fellow students to strengthening our campus and beyond. I encourage you to learn more about these outstanding individuals and the impact they are making.
Preparing Students to Lead and Serve
- I am proud that our new ROTC Facility and Student Veterans Center will create a dedicated home for the cadets and student veterans who are part of our campus community. This space will support their leadership development and help ensure they feel connected, supported and valued at Alabama as we honor their service to our nation.
- UA students pursuing cybersecurity are preparing for work that carries real responsibility. Through hands-on learning and industry partnerships, they are developing the skills and judgment needed to help protect our digital infrastructure and serve communities across Alabama and beyond.
- Social work students are also doing remarkable work, including gaining hands-on experience in Washington, D.C., alongside national organizations and policymakers in a semester-long practicum. Opportunities like this help them see the impact they can have and equip them to lead and serve where they are needed most.
Students Making a Difference
- One of the most meaningful aspects of this University is how our students choose to serve others. Recently, students have been working with local veterans, helping them build digital skills and form new connections. Their willingness to give their time and talent speaks to the character and compassion that define our campus community.
- The Center for Service and Leadership provides students with opportunities to serve communities across Alabama while growing as leaders. I hope you will explore how you can get involved and use your time at Alabama to make a difference in the lives of others.
Alabama Leadership on the National Stage
- Alabama men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats has been named an assistant coach for the 2026 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, bringing UA leadership to one of our nation’s premier youth basketball programs. His selection reflects the high regard for the coaching excellence cultivated here at Alabama and demonstrates how our community contributes to success and leadership well beyond campus.
Looking Ahead
- Spring holidays begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13, and I hope this time provides an opportunity to rest and recharge. Whether you are traveling, spending time with family and friends, or choosing to give back, I encourage you to use the break in a way that is meaningful to you. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Voices of UA

“Being part of the behind-the-scenes work that shapes legislation has deepened my appreciation for the policymaking process and strengthened my commitment to advocacy. The UA D.C. Program has challenged me to think about how my work connects back to Alabama and the communities I hope to serve. It is an experience I truly could not get from just any internship.”
