The Cartographic Research Laboratory, established in 1982, is a self-supporting, nonprofit facility, receiving funding through the sale of publications and projects from clientele. The Laboratory staff is made up of graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in geography. Laboratory staff provides custom mapping and GIS services for private and public clients as well as spatial analytical services for economic development, site selection and grant proposals. Extensive work has been performed in preparing reports for litigation dealing with political redistricting and fair housing disputes. The Laboratory hosts and maintains perhaps the largest on-line historical map collections available to the public.
